musubi musashi

tonight's dinner was musubi musashi, fruit and houji-cha!
musubi is "onigiri (rice ball)" in hiroshima-ben, and musubi musashi is a famous local eatery.

wakadori-musubi bento: 780yen (about USD10), fruit from fukuya department store: 399 yen (about USD5) and houji-cha from max-value: 78 yen (about $1). total: $16.

the bento box is made of wood. pretty neat! inside are 2 musubi, one is ume and the other is konbu (i think). 3 pieces of fried chicken. an orange slice. the red and white packet is filled with salt to sprinkle on top of your edamame and cabbage. finally, there's a small wiener in the upper right corner, and some tsukemono (pickled vegetables) to the left of the musubi to the top.

i don't know why this picture is here and not higher up. i don't know how to move pictures around on blogger... but, when you open the bento, you get a hand drawn map of hiroshima city + musubi musashi locations. the bento is closed with rubber bands and has an oshibori (hand wipe) and chopsticks.
this bento is the perfect size. you aren't left feeling stuffed, but you aren't wanting. if you wanted some ice cream or something afterwards, there's just enough space in your stomach to fit in a small scoop :9
the cut fruit isn't remarkable. but, the price is if you haven't lived in japan before.
honestly, i never bought much fruit when i lived in the US, but after i came to japan, i wished i had taken the time to eat more fruit when i was back home. haha
my boyfriend tells me that in japan, "no one eats a whole apple themselves. we cut it up and eat it with 2 or 3 other people." based on the size of fuji apples and their relative hardness?, i guess i wouldn't want to eat a whole apple either...

the inside of the bento wrapping includes some phrases in hiroshima-ben (leftside) with their "regular" japanese translations to the right. my boyfriend insists that most young people in hiroshima only use a few of those phrases, but, it's still fun to learn them!
